AAPA Receives H1N1 Update at National Vaccine Advisory Committee Meeting

AAPA recently attended the fall 2009 meeting of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC), which was highlighted by a situational update on H1N1 influenza.

In his opening remarks, Harry Koh, MD, assistant secretary for health in the Department of Health and Human Services, emphasized the current administration’s engagement in creating a system of prevention that is timely and at the same time engendering public trust.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has licensed four vaccines for the 2009 H1N1 influenza. The vaccine purchased by the government is expected to be available in October.A continuous roll out of the first 50 million doses is planned via centralized distribution to state and local health agencies.

Among the key H1N1 influenza updates given to attendees was that ancillary supplies (sharp boxes, swabs, needles) will be provided at no cost. Every state is developing a vaccine delivery plan. The vaccine will be available in a combination of settings such as vaccination clinics organized by local health departments, health care provider offices, schools, and other private settings such as pharmacies and workplaces.

Health departments are presently enrolling/pre-registering facilities interested in administering the H1N1 vaccine. Pre-registered sites are not committed to administering vaccine; however, they will receive periodic updates and vaccine planning information. Prior to receiving vaccine, sites will need to complete a provider agreement that outlines the specific terms and conditions of vaccine use and accountability as defined by federal and state authorities. Assessment of vaccine distribution, administration and coverage are planned, as well as evaluation of vaccine safety and effectiveness.

Up-to-date information on influenza can be obtained at www.flu.gov.  Information on NVAC can be obtained at http://www.hhs.gov/nvpo/nvac/.
