Australia [Archive]

 

Aug 09- The University of Queensland begins matriculation for its Masters in Physician Assistant Studies.  The program slated to begin in 2010 is not available to international students at this time.

May 09 - Teri Peischl, PAC at Royal Adelaide Hospital, Department of Anesthesia, Pain and hyperbaric Medicine gave a presentation entitled  Piloting PAs in Australia at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 37th Annual Conference in San Diego, California.

May 09 - Alex Clerfond, MPH, PA-C Senior Lecturer, Clinical Skill Unit, James Cook University School of Medicine and Dentistry, gave a presentation entitled  PA Program Development North Queensland at the International Symposium held in in conjunction with AAPA's 37th Annual Conference in San Diego, California.

May 08 - Sue Stack, PhD of Workforce Reform & Information Workforce Development, gave a presentation entitled Introducing the PA concept into South Australia at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 36th Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Apr 08 - An article Side by Side Can physician assistants help rural doctors? highlighting what PAs could do for rural health care and what can be learned from the US experience appeared in Australian Rural Doctor.

Mar 08 - A research paper from the Parliament of Australia entitled Health workforce: a case for physician assistants" concluded that there is potential to adapt the physician assistant model to suit the Australian health system.

Bahamas


Apr 04 - Pacific University PA program begins a student rotation within the Public Health System; Faculty to do site visit in July and formal presentation on the PA concept.

May 09 - John Cunnington, MD, FRCP, Assistant Dean, McMaster University gave a presentation entitled  Physician Assistant Education Program  at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 37th Annual Conference in San Diego, California.

May 09 - Ian  W. Jones, PA-C, CA-cert, MPAS, current CAPA president, gave a presentation entitled   Association canadienne des adjoints au médecin Canadian Association of Physician Assistants Updates-AAPA 2009  to AAPA's Board of Directors in San Diego, California.

May 09 - Jeff Goodyear, Director Health Human Resource Policy Branch, Ministry of Health  and Long Term Care, Ontario Canada gave a presentation entitled Physician Assistants in Ontario:  Establishing a Foothold at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 37th Annual Conference in San Diego, California.

May 09 - Bill 84  An Act to Amend an Act Respecting the New Brunswick Medical Society and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick  was introduced to allow for the licensing of physician assistants in the province.

April 09 - The province of New Brunswick released a document entitled  Report on the Feasibility of Introducing Physician Assistants to New Brunswick  was released with the recommendation to use PAs in emergency departments.

April 09 - The British Columbia Medical Association released a  policy statement supporting the establishement and deployment of PAs in British Columbia.

Aug 08 - The Canadian Medical Association, the provincial and territorial medical associations and the Canadian Association of Physician Asssitants will host the 2nd National Physician Assistants Symposium October 5, 2008 in Ottawa, Canada.

May 08 - Ian Jones, MPAS, BCHS, PA-C, CA-cert and Neil Berrington, M, Med., FRCS(GLAS), FCS(SA) gave a presentation The Impact of PAs in Tertiary Care at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 36th Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

May 08 - Dr. Joshua Tepper, Assistant Deputy Minister Health Human Resources Strategy Division Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Ontario, Canada gave a presentation How's Progress? Physician Assistants in Ontario: 2 years from Day 1 at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 36th Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

May 08 - McMaster University located in Hamilton, Ontario announced the start of their training program.The 24-month program confer graduates with a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree - B.H.Sc. (PA). The first cohort is slated to begin September 2008.

Mar 08 - The University of Manitoba, the first university in Canada to offer a two-year, full-time Physician Assistant Education Program for non-military PAs is supported by the Province of Manitoba department of health. The graduate level program will confer a Master of Physician Assistant Studies. The program will begin in September 2008.

Apr 03 - Pacific University PA program offers a two-week Spanish immersion program to PA students; the course offers medical Spanish at the beginner, intermediate and advanced level.

Apr 04 - Pacific University PA program sends 7-10 students/year for elective clinical rotations.

Estonia


Oct 02 - The University of Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) recently established a relationship with the Estonia College of Medicine. USP students majoring in PA studies at the undergraduate program will be able to shadow feldshers in Estonia. The program will be organized and supervised by a PA faculty at USP. The program will begin Summer 2003.

Germany


Apr 04 - Michael Finigan MD Panelist at The Future of Physician Workforce meeting in conjunction with 110th Congress of the German Academy of Internal Medicine discussed the development of PA programs in the US as well as PA practice.

Ghana [Archive]


May 09 -  E.T. Adjase, MD, MPH, Director Rural Health Training Program gave a presentation entitled  The Ghana Health Care Model-Education, Workforce and Service Issues of Medical Assistants (PA Analog)  at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 37th Annual Conference in San Diego, California. 

May 08 - James Antwi, Deputy Director Human Resource Development, Ministry of Health and Dr. E.T. Adjase, Director Rural Health Training Program gave a presentation entitled Improving Health Care in Ghana: The Role of the Medical Assistant at AAPA's International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 36th Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Apr 05 - Victor P.Y. Gadzekpo, President, Central University College meets with GWU PA program faculty and AAPA staff to explore his university's interest in starting a PA program.

Greece

Aug 04 - Investigation on the possibility of an exchange program between PA's at certain medical center in the US and clinical staff from a hospital for the purpose of educational and cultural learning opportunities.

Guatemala


Apr 04 - IHMEC annual meeting held; Board of directors considering expansion to include a representative from a PA program.

Haiti [Archive]


Oct 02 - The physician extender program graduated the first class of 7 students. The physician extenders will work in the Albert Schweitzer Hospital for 2 years to repay the obligation. Faculty at the Kettering PA program are planning for the next class of students that will start late 2003.

Apr 04 - Pacific University maintains an affiliation agreement with Shoulder to Shoulder; Students able to do an elective rotation.

India


Sep 02 - The Indian Association of PAs (IAPA) contacted AAPA staff. IAPA was started in 1998. They have 180 members and are working on gaining recognition from the government. They have no prescriptive privileges. The India PA program was introduced by Dr. K.M. Cherian, at the Institute of Cardiovascular disease, Madras Medical Mission in 1992. The course is run in collaboration with Birla Institute of Science & Technology. A similar curriculum is offered at 3 other institutions. The graduates are employed in various hospitals (cardiothoracic surgery, providing pre and post op care) not only in India but also in Singapore and Libya.

Aug 07 - Professor Gerald O'Sullivan, President, Royal College of Surgeons and Tommie Martin, National Director, Office of the CEO, Health Service Executive, are scheduled to visit the Drexel University PA program.

Italy [Archive]


Jul 02 - Upon further discussion with the Italian Osteopathic Association, they are unable to establish rotations at this time.

Jamaica


Jan 02 - physician visited the AAPA booth at the ACS meeting and expressed interest in the profession.

Japan [Archive]


Jun 08 - The Japanese Department of Health gave the Japanese Association of Surgeons Research Group on Team Approach to Health Care a grant to visit the U.S. to learn about the roles that Physicians Assistants and Nurse Practitioners play in surgeries and other inpatient settings so as to implement either physician assistnats or nurse practitioners in Japan in the future.

A delegation visited the national office as part of a 2 day fact finding misison of the PA profession. Hiroshi Nishida, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor Department of Cardiovascular Surgery , Tokyo Women's Medical University headed the delelegation. He was accompanied by Ryuji Tominaga, MD, PhD Professor and Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University and Tadaaki Maehara, MD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery, National Defense Medical College. Sayaka Ogata, NP accompanied them on the visit and served as a translator.

The Delegation met with faculty and staff of the Yale PA Program, Yale School of Nursing and NP program, met with PAs and NPs and staff of the Yale University School of Medicine.

Netherlands [Archive]


May 07 - Delegation from the Netherlands attends AAPA's annual conference in Philadelphia. Margaret Bakker, Department Director, Utrecht PA program discussed the successes and problems encountered in attempting to increase the visibility of the profession in the Netherlands.

New Zealand [Archive]


Nov 02 - Ministry of Health undertook two studies an assessment of primary health care needs and the identification of the various solutions or revision to the current health system. At this time, the Ministry has determined not to consider introducing the physician assistant profession into their health care system.

Papua New Guinea [Archive]


Sep 03 - The Minister of Health Dr Nicholas Mann and the Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Papua New Guinea are among those who visited The Utah Physician Assistant Program. The PA program is exploring the establishment of training partnership which will allow for student and faculty exchanges.

Russia [Archive]


Oct 02 - Wayne State University faculty recently received a grant to teach preventive medicine for 3 months in the fall of 2003. The curriculum focusing on public health care issues will be part of a train the trainer program and will be taught to instructors that recertify teachers.

Scotland [Archive]


Dec 09- Dorothy Armstrong, Programme Director NHS was interviewed on ReachMD "PAs Around the World: Introduction to the Scottish National Health Service" by Lisa Dandrea Lenell.  Ms. Armstrong spoke on the results of the Scottish Pilot Project and the future of PAs in the Scottish Healthcare system.

May 09 - Dorothy Armstrong, RN, Programme Director, National Health Service (NHS) Education for Scotland and Patricia O'Connor, MD, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Clinical Coordinator NHS Education for Scotland gave a presentation entitled  Should Physician Assistants be Part of the NHS Scotland Workforce? A report of the Two-Year PA Pilot and Implications for the Future  at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 37th Annual Conference in San Diego, California.

Jun 08 - NHS Education for Scotland released a report from the University of Aberdeen - An Evaluation of Physician Assistants in NHS Grampian

May 08 - Margaret Currie, B.Sc, M.Sc, research fellow, Jane Farmer, MA, PhD, Jeff Hyman, BA, MA gave a presentation The PA Initiative in Scotland: Preliminary Evaluation of PAs in NHS Scotland" at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 36th Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

South Africa [Archive]


Oct 09 The American International Health Alliance (AIHA) announces a request for  proposal  for a partnership between Walter Sisulu University Faculty of Health Sciences and an academic institution with expertise in training physician assistants.  The partnership will increase the numbers of mid-level professionals in South Africa by strengthening Walter Sisulu University's Clinical Associates Programs.

Aug 08 - Health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang launched the training of Clinical Associate programme in South Africa at Walter Sisulu University. The 3 year training program will confer graduates a Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice (B.CMBP). The Medical and Dental Board of the Health Professions Counsil of South Africa will register qualified Clinical Associates. Other training programs will be at the Universities of Witwatersad, Limpopo and Pretoria.

Jun 08 - A three year clinical associate program has been established by the Department of Health to produce a cadre of health professionals who will work mainly in community health centers and district hospitals.

Jan 04 - University of Kentucky exploring placement of PA students.

Taiwan [Archive]


May 05 - Presentation made by Dr Chi-Hui Kao Lo at AAPA's International Symposium in conjunction with the 33rd Annual conference in Orlando. Dr Lo gave an update of the Fooyin Program. The PA legislation has failed. Currently upon completion of the program, graduates awarded a diploma in nursing and not PA studies.

Jul 04 - The University of Utah Physician Assistant Program (UTAP) pilots the Thailand International Elective (TIE). UTAP plans electives in January, April, June and September 2005. Further information on the 4 week elective program can be obtained at http://www.tie-thailand.net/

United Kingdom (England) [Archive]


Jan-10 Skills for Care and Skills for Health will host their second international conference New Type of Working in Health and Social Care in London, England.

Jan-09 St George's University of London is offering a Postgraduate Diploma in Physician Assistant studies.

May 08 - Skills for Care and Skills for Health will host a conference International New Types of Worker in Health and Social Care in London, England in January 2009.

May 08 - Nick Ross, MA, Associate Professor, Director of Learning and Teaching (Medicine) University of Birmingham, UK, gave two presentations Birmingham-Wolverhamptom PA Program Collaboration and National PA Education Group in the UK/International Perspectives at the International Symposium held in conjunction with AAPA's 36th Annual Conference, San Antonio Texas.

Apr 08 - NHS West Midlands will host a conference entitled Physician Assistants-Here, Now & the Future in Birmingham, England April 1, 2008.

Jan 08 - Wolverhampton and Birmingham Universities started the first major PA programme in the UK on 7th January.

Jul 07 - The Universities of Wolverhampton and Birmingham formally announced that they would launch in January 2008 the first large scale courses to train PAs in the UK. Graduates of the program will obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Physician Assistant Studies

Vietnam


Mar 01 - Interest expressed in developing a student rotation at the University of Hue. At present country does not have a need for a PA program as they have a surplus of physicians who due to the nursing shortage hire physicians for traditional nursing duties.
