Twenty-five percent of PAs surveyed by the AAPA report general surgery and surgical subspecialties as their primary practice area. In addition to PAs’ ability to first and second assist at surgery, they provide pre- and post-operative care and patient education, prescribe medication, emergency room coverage, and coordinate care for surgical patients in the intensive care unit or ward.
