AAPA Names 2010 Beneficiary of its Annual Host City Prevention Campaign!

The South Georgia Farmworker Health Project to Receive Hundreds of Books In Support of Health Literacy Efforts

The great success of 2009's theme has inspired the Physician Assistant Foundation to once again promote literacy for the 2010 Host City Prevention Campaign. The HCPC is an annual philanthropic project that benefits a charitable organization in the host city of AAPA's Annual Physician Assistant Conference, which for 2010 will be held in warm and entertaining Atlanta, Georgia. Funds will be raised for organizations around the country who work to promote literacy, with a third of the funds going to the host city beneficiary organization. The South Georgia Farmworker Health Project will be the 2010 beneficiary, and will culminate with the donation of not just a monetary gift, but hundreds of children's books for the project to use towards educating migrant and seasonal farmworkers.

The South Georgia Farmworker Health Project (SGFHP) is a well-established community-campus collaborative project, developed and managed by the Emory Physician Assistant Program. Beyond its direct impact on a very medically underserved and impoverished patient base, it has had substantial impact on communities, individual PA and physician volunteers, and Emory PA students. They are now entering their fifteenth year of outreach. Originally they started out with a one-week clinic; however since 1998 they have done 2 weeks in June during the peak season.

The project provides direct service to approximately 1900 farm workers and their dependents during their time in South Georgia. Although many only have minor complaints, significant disorders were addressed in numbers of our patients. It also provides an important educational experience and impact for students, faculty, and volunteers.

The potential impact that PA students from across the nation can have on this organization, and more importantly, on society, is tremendous! We know that you will want to join us in this important project!
