PA Compact Legislation Advances in Several States

Last week, several states advanced the PA Compact model legislation. Here is an overview of recent activity; to see the progress of the PA compact in your state or for more information on the PA compact please visit https://www.aapa.org/advocacy-central/pa-licensure-compact/.

  • Tennessee
    SB 1727 passed out of the Senate Health and Welfare committee with a unanimous vote.
  • Rhode Island
    Hearing held for HB 7083 in House Corporations Committee; bill was held for further study.
  • Washington
    HB 1917 passed out of the House chamber unanimously.
  • Colorado
    SB 24-018 passed Senate HHS Committee with a vote of 7-0 and was just heard by the Senate Committee on Finance.

Legislation is also currently pending in ten other states:

  • Maine
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Vermont
  • Virginia

In 2023, three states – Delaware, Utah, and Wisconsin – enacted the PA Compact model legislation.

After seven states have enacted the compact model legislation, the compact will be activated and begin the process to operationalize the compact and be able to give out privileges to practice. The process to operationalize the compact will take anywhere from 18-24 months. Once operationalized, eligible PAs can then complete a single application to receive a compact privilege (which is equivalent to a license) from each compact state in which they intend to practice.
