On May 10, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law HF 424, legislation that removes the requirement for a PA to be supervised by a physician in order to practice medicine.

AAPA Responds to Expiration of CMS Public Health Emergency
The public health emergency (PHE) declaration, put in place by the federal government during the COVID-19 pandemic, temporarily lifted several outdated policies that prevented PAs from practicing to the full extent of their education and experience. In a letter to CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, AAPA requested that certain PHE policies become permanent and others be discontinued or amended.

With the recent Texas House of Representatives passage of HB 2544, the Lone Star State is on its way toward becoming the next state to adopt the PA Licensure Compact! On April 26, the House passed the legislation by a vote of 135-11.

Modernization of Colorado PA Practice Act a Significant Win for Patients
On April 26, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed into law SB 083, legislation that will update state law to allow most PAs to practice collaboratively with a physician rather than to practice under a supervisory agreement. The bill takes effect later this summer.
