Maine’s governor signed LD 1660, an Act to Improve Access to Physician Assistant Care, to help address the public health crisis of COVID-19 in Maine. It was under consideration before the legislature adjourned indefinitely. This was Maine Association of PAs top legislative priority.

CMS Expands Medicare Telemedicine Coverage

CMS announced expanded Medicare telehealth coverage to enable beneficiaries to receive a wider range of healthcare services without having to travel to an office, clinic or health care facility. Previously, Medicare was only allowed to pay health professionals for telemedicine services in certain situations.

New York Legislative Victory a Win for PAs and Patients

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently signed S04841, permitting PAs to execute orders not to resuscitate and orders pertaining to life sustaining treatments. The legislation added PAs to various statutory provisions that previously only included physicians and nurse practitioners.

PAs Advance the Profession at the Federal Level in 2019

From their efforts to authorize PAs to receive direct payment under Medicare to ordering and certifying the need for home health and diabetic shoes under Medicare, PAs advocated to advance the profession in 2019 and have more work ahead in 2020.
